Stem Cell Therapy Streamlines Tissue Regeneration
What is so unique about Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem Cell Therapy is a regenerative therapy which uses the body’s own mesenchymal stem cells and biological growth factors to heal and regenerate injured tissue such as ligaments, tendons, joints and cartilage. Theoretically, stem cells can regenerate every organ, muscle, vascular system and nerve pathway in the body. When combined with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, a stem cell treatment is turbocharged with more growth factors and cells that have a greater ability to recruit the immune system to heal. The science behind Stem Cell therapy is constantly expanding and has demonstrated remarkable results. With Stem Cell Therapy, you are not just treating your symptoms, you are repairing yourself cell by cell using nature’s most outstanding biological miracle, the stem cell.
Depending on the severity of your medical condition, Dr. Scott Greenberg may recommend Kinetic Regenerative Therapy (KRT). It is a proactive approach that seeks to halt the progression of numerous conditions and repair injured joints. KRT is a low-risk, high-reward series of infusion treatments that are steroid and opioid-free and completely natural.
Kinetic Regenerative Therapy includes Prolotherapy, Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments and Stem Cell Treatments. Dr. Greenberg may suggest one or a combination of the three. All three treatment modalities are excellent alternatives to pain management or surgery.
Why are mesenchymal stem cells used and are they safe?
Mesenchymal stem cells are created in bone marrow but stored in highest concentrations in fat cells which makes them easy to harvest. They are multipotent stromal cells that can include osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), adipocytes (fat cells), myocytes (muscle cells) pericytes (vascular system cells), endothelial cells, neural progenitor cells, and other components. Also, the presence of White Blood Cells, Macrophages and growth factors which help reduce infections, promote proliferation of collagen and enhance growth. Since the mesenchymal cells are autologous, taken from the patient, there is a minuscule risk of rejection. This process is quite different than when compared to a bone marrow treatment, which contains some mesenchymal cells, but also contain hematopoietic cells that generate our blood cells, but do not generate tissue.
What can I expect from a typical stem cell treatment?
To assess if regenerative stem cell treatments can help you, Dr. Scott Greenberg and his team will review your medical history, pertinent radiographic studies such as X-rays and MRIs, and perform a Comprehensive Kinetic Diagnosis that includes a hands-on examination of the site of your physical complaint and all areas related to it. A Comprehensive Kinetic Diagnosis seeks to identify the root cause of your pain, and create a roadmap for joint regeneration that resolves the core problem and eliminates many of your symptoms.
During the procedure, local anesthetic is used to help numb both the harvest and treatment region when possible. The harvest area is the site where your cells are drawn from your adipose tissue using two very small incisions. They are then prepared according to FDA guidelines by your Stem Cell Therapy team. Dr. Greenberg will then perform a comprehensive treatment to the damaged region and related areas that further are contributing to the source of pain and joint dysfunction. Often, the adipose is used as a fat graft in patients who have joint damage in knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, elbows and thumbs, while patients with neck and back pain will receive direct treatment to areas of the spine and sacrum.
How many treatments will I need?
Every patient is different, plus there are factors such as age, the severity of the injury, immune response, and the rate of healing to consider. For some patients, positive results may be felt within a week. Other patients may require several months of healing. It is essential to keep in mind that the treatment is activating your body to heal itself by regenerating soft tissue. You have to give the cell structures time to grow back. In our process, we augment our stem cell procedures with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) even after the initial treatment until we achieve optimal results. Prior to any treatment, Dr. Greenberg and his team will review the treatment plan designed to help you heal.
Everyone says, choose an experienced stem cell doctor. How much experience does Dr. Greenberg have?
For the past twenty years, Dr. Greenberg has studied the behavior of stem cells and researched their complex nature. Since 1999, he has learned researched how tissue-specific stem cells function in the body, how they regenerate nerve, joint and tissue systems and how they depend on other blood components to heal an injury. He will typically perform several hundred stem cell procedures and a few thousand PRP treatments per year.
Dr. Greenberg is a pioneering leader in developing new stem cell-based therapies. He serves as the chair of the Institutional Review Board of the American Association of Stem Cell Physicians and is a founding board member. He is also a consulting physician for DSM, a leader in regenerative biological medicine. He was a member of the first team to publish case study to repair a meniscus tear using autologous stem cell therapy. He also has the distinction to be selected and accredited as Director of the Regenerative Medicine team at the Dee Adams Center for Integrative and Regenerative Medicine at the Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Doctor Greenberg is a member of the American College for the Advancement in Medicine and a member of the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine. He holds Board Certification in Family Practice and is a recipient of the Physicians Recognition Award from the American Medical Association. He is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners.
